A root canal treats infection or inflammation deep inside a tooth, in the part called the pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels live. When decay or a crack lets bacteria reach the pulp, the result is often a toothache you can't ignore: throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, or swelling near the tooth. A root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and saves the tooth itself, which is almost always better than pulling it.

Despite the reputation, a modern root canal feels a lot like getting a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the pain of the infection before treatment. The procedure is what makes it stop.
